Foods to Avoid When You Have PCOS

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or PCOS is very common amongst the women of today. While it is caused by a combination of genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors, it can be prevented from getting worse by adopting healthy food habits. Here are 7 Foods to avoid during PCOS.

1. Soy and Soy-Based Products:

Soy products such as soya chunks and tofu are a great source of protein. However, unfortunately they are particularly rich in a substance called phytoestrogen. This can trick your body into believing it has too much estrogen and thereby hamper your menstrual cycle.

2. Red Meats:

Red Meats such as beef, lamb and pork are the foods to avoid during PCOS. These are backed with substances that can cause inflammation in the tissues within the body. People have experienced their PCOS symptoms getting worse after consuming red meat.

3. Refined Cooking Oil:

Stay away from refined cooking oils such as sunflower and canola oils. These oils raise the Low Density Lipids or Bad Cholesterol levels. Out body needs fats, however these should come from good and healthy fat sources. Avocado oil, grapeseed oil and coconut oil are great alternatives for refined cooking oils.

4. Alcohol:

Alcohol can disturb the delicate hormonal balance in the body. Furthermore, it can also transform into fat and sugars when processed by the body. The detrimental effects of alcohol include inflammation that can worsen PCOS. Thus, alcohol should be avoided at all costs!

5. Sugar:

Sugar or sweeteners are one of the main foods to avoid during PCOS. Many women with PCOS also suffer from insulin resistance. This implies that they have higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Women with PCOS, and anyone in general should limit, and preferably eliminate processed sugars from their diet. White sugar, sweetened sodas and juices, and sugar loaded jams and so on must be avoided at all costs.

6. Caffeine:

Caffeine has the ability to make the hormonal cycle go haywire, and exacerbate PCOS. Hence, it should be avoided. Some forms of caffeine, such as coffee also cause dehydration and acidity, making them an absolute no-no!
